Roar and Explore: Scouting to Zoo

For the first time since our group finished opening all our sections, we all went to Marwell for their Roar and Explore: Scouting the Zoo event. And what a day it was! The weather was amazing and we all had the best time!

We were all dropped off to meet at the zoo and once the last of us had arrived, it was time to go in. Once checked in, it was time to head off and start exploring.

Our first stop was to head towards the Snow Leopards but on the way we checked out the animals en route.

There were Tapirs, Oryxes and Rhinos before we got there, as well as geese and their goslings! They were so exciting to see but we were really pleased to see the Leopards as they're often quite shy.

Next, we went to the Science and Learning Centre where there were animal pelts and skulls to examine. We were surprised at how soft some were, like the snow leopard, and how rough others were, like the cheetah. A lot of our group were concerned about where the skins had come from, a great concern in this age of conservation. We assured them that the animals hadn't been harmed by the zoo staff. Our assumption was that they were animals that had passed naturally or needed to be put to sleep due to illness, but when we spoke to the staff, they explained they'd been donated by Customs. So although they were illegally taken, they were being put to good use to help explain the problems of poaching as well as teaching them the benefits of looking after animals in the wild. Even our youngest Squirrel Scouts understood that to kill an animal for its pelt is naughty.

There was a quick pitstop for photos at the Otter photo board before heading into the Thriving Through Nature exhibit. It was really hot in there but there was a waterfall they encouraged us to put our hands in! We also had fun looking for the animals that live in the venue and finding it funny that Bagheera couldn't spot the lizard that we could all see really easily! She spotted it eventually.

Next we headed over to see the Wallabies being fed and on the way spotted Red Pandas hiding in the trees and some Zebra too.

All that adventure and that was only the morning! Time to stop for lunch.

Once we'd had a chance to let our lunches settle, we needed to run off some of the excess energy we'd just gained by refuelling with lunch. Time for the climbing frame!

Energy regulated, it was time to head into the Life Among the Trees part of the park. Bagheera waited outside with the trolleys so Robin and Rebecca took turns with her camera.

Before we saw more animals, we had a run around while some people had a pitstop. Naturally, we sang Everywhere We Go because how better to spend your time than singing about Mighty 4th Gosport!

Time for more animals!

The day finally came to an end, we were there so long some of the zoo keepers had to remind us of the time until closing! We had the most incredible time and we can't wait for the next adventure!

Believe it or not, there are more photos if you want to take a look. You'll find them all on our public Facebook page. Don't forget to sign up to our newsletter for more updates of our adventures!
